The whole story on one line

Nine chapters, 13.8 billion years, one line to hang them on. Each stop on the line is a chapter — read them in order for the full arc, or pull any one down on its own.

How to use the line

The line is honest about scale, which means it is mostly empty. Everything before farming fits in the first two stops; everything since the printing press crowds into the last three. That crowding is the story: change itself sped up. When the centuries blur together, come back to the line and find your chapter by its dates — the reading guide explains how each chapter is built, and the glossary keeps the names straight.
